Marlow is about twenty minutes drive from my home in Wokingham, but the journey is certainly worthwhile, the shops alive and exciting and the many restaurants vibrant and enticing. None more so than my destination on a wonderful warm September evening in the company of Jane, a work colleague, and someone who has more than a little working knowledge of food and wine, drawing on experience gained in a number of countries throughout the world. A leisurely walk across the ornate bridge over the calm river with its multiple reflections was a sheer pleasure, a sign of the evening ahead.

Roast vine tomato and buffalo mozzarella on olive toast with basil, colourful, delicate, and certainly not overpowering in any way. This was a fresh, healthy starter and one to set the tone for the evening, complementary flavours and textures, created with style and served on a plain white rounded dish, it would have made a wonderful picture had it not been eaten with such enthusiasm.

I was greatly attracted by the tempura of king prawns with chilli and lime jam, if I described my king prawns as perfect it would almost be an understatement, they were simply stunning.

Jane was drawn to the calves liver with dried cured bacon, with mashed potato and onion rings, a delightfully formed dish served with style and flair. Jane described it as
