A warm chilly January evening and a five minute drive to Blubeckers, situated on the county border between Berkshire and Hampshire, allowed Sue and I to see revisit to see how this group or so restaurants is progressing.
The first thing we noticed was the family atmosphere, in addition to numerous couples enjoying the delights of dining out there were five or six families dining at their chosen tables as we arrived at 7.30pm, a welcome sign for those seeking an appropriate venue for a birthday celebration involving the family.
Confirming our booking we were asked if we would like to have a drink outside whilst we studied the menu, a pleasing way to start the evening, and probably one of the last opportunities to do so before the worst of the winter arrives with a vengeance. A chilled white wine and a gin and tonic seemed perfect partners for a warm evening of relaxed dining, and the extensive menu presented to us added to the pleasure. The menu is divided into categories, starters, favourites, fish, ribs and burgers, sizzling fajitas, from the chargrill, pastas and salads and side orders, with the rear of the large menu devoted to attractively priced wines and soft drinks.
Sue chose the Crab, Crayfish and Rocket Salad with lemon & dill mayonnaise to start, a veritable mountain of a dish which was delightful, if rather large. Portions at this restaurant are certainly not small, and the crayfish and crab were perfect, if a little overwhelmed by the amount of rocket on the plate. I enjoyed a salad also, a magnificent Spinach, Avocado, Bacon & Stilton Salad, sheer perfection! I simply loved this dish, one I suggested to Sue should be added to her growing repertoire for home dining, a suggestion met with a blank stare as if to say, why give this to an amateur at home when we can come here and dine at the table of a professional! It is also offered as a main course, ideal for those at this time of year wishing to enjoy themselves without adding to the waistline, vital after the culinary demands of the festive season.
Our chosen wine, a very smooth red, selected by Sue and met with great pleasure, this was certainly added to her little book, brought for just such worthy thoughts and additions spotted in hotels and restaurants. There were twenty wines on offer, all offered by the small glass, larger glass or by the bottle and not one priced beyond
