Preparing for a five day visit to Europe with passengers including Lucy, eight month old granddaughter, the search was on for a travelling companion, one that would serve the needs of the family on the move.

Time spent surfing the Internet lead me to Waeco, acknowledged specialists in this particular field of in car cooling equipment. Our initial priority was to find an item that would keep a selection of baby food heated so that Lucy could be fed her normal meals at regular intervals, after all she loves her food and is very happy as well as being a contented passenger if the food is as close to her normal routine as possible. In finding this invaluable addition to our journey, we found we had the very best of both worlds, not only did it keep the food hot, later it allowed us to store colder drinks safely and efficiently through a simple switch, it is both a heated box as well as a cool box.

The style of the cooling box meant we could store a variety of items to keep chilled the instructions suggests the best results are obtained if you fill the cooling box with food and beverages already refrigerated. Our box took no more than ten minutes after plugging in the connector to the cigarette lighter, with a green light when cooling and a red light when heating.

The great feature about this invaluable addition was the adaptability, hot and cold; it could act also as an additional armrest in the back of a standard car. We were using an MPV, a Kia Sedona with six large leather seats for our European visit, and used the box on the floor. Upon our return I tried it in the rear of my Focus, in the centre of the back seat, attached by means of the seat belt. Ideal, taking little space and yet offering so very much, including the invaluable opportunity to transport my regular intake of Indian cuisine back from my favourite restaurants without cooling the quality of the prepared dishes.

Before my visit I had only ever heard occasional mention of these boxes, I had given little thought to the need for them, stopping for drinks, hot and cold when required. Adopting my grandparental responsibilities I felt a real need to ensure that there would be minimal disruption to her dining routine, and Waeco certainly came to the rescue, with her dishes losing nothing of the prepared temperature, retaining both appeal and taste.

More than that, this box became a reliable and invaluable travelling companion that was helpful to all passengers, it can travel again with us, to the beach, abroad on a European tour with young and demanding travellers as well as to a range of inviting and welcoming Indian restaurants where the box will ensure supper is delivered home safely, securely and at the desired temperature.

What more can you ask of any travelling companion than that?
