Kathmandu 34

I must admit to a very limited knowledge of Nepalese food prior to my recent visit to Henley, visiting this jewel in the Henley crown has raised the question as to why it has taken so long to uncover the delights of both the people and the cuisine.

Kathmandu 34, found on Reading Road in Henley, is, quite simply, a delight to visit, to savour and visit again and again. At the cutting edge of contemporary design, with bright lighting, vivid colours, wooden floors and lots of gleaming glass it is that and much, much more. Under the experienced and watchful eye of owner and occasional chef, Kedar Jaishi, the restaurant offers a stylish and extensive menu with a wine list offering depth and value for money. Above all the friendly nature of the staff supports the relaxed nature within the restaurant, reflected by the constant chatter of contented diners.

Enjoying a table for four gave us the opportunity to taste a variety of dishes, as well as discussing the polished gem we had uncovered. As we discussed the range within the menu a large and attractive salad was placed carefully in the centre of the table, a wonderful and colourful mixture of chopped carrot and cucumber served on fresh web lettuce leaves. Chewing over a menu has an added dimension with such an inventive and healthy addition to each table, a wonderful touch.

As sensible and committed weight watchers all, we decided to share two starters between the four, with a Prawn Puree and a Chicken Rukum shared across our table. The Chicken Rukum comprised of diced chicken tikka, tossed with onion and cucumber in a tangy sauce and was one of the finest and tastiest starters I have enjoyed, now added to my list of favourite dishes. With a Sancerre nicely chilled and served we had all embarked upon a journey of real discovery, with at least nine main dishes selected before it came to the actual order for only four, underlining the very reason for making plans for a return visit.

I selected the Chicken Perrow, a close relative of the better-known Jalfrezi dish, with tender pieces of chicken, marinated with freshly ground spices and saut
