San Marco is one of the newest boys on the Caversham block, having opened within the past year and situated at no 5 Prospect Street, and in the centre of the restaurant haven over the other side of the river to Reading.

Designed and decorated in a beautiful and simple manner by the two owners, Salvatore, front of house manager and Allesandro, chef, the restaurant offers a wide selection of authentic and wholesome Italian food, and delivered in style by some of the best staff around. Accompanied by Audrey, my mother in law, we set off to put them to the test by swooping on them on a Monday evening.

We had a small selection of garlic bread whilst deliberating on the myriad of dishes on the menu, bread that set the tone for the evening. Carefully presented and beautifully prepared the bread was covered in a sea of cherry tomatoes, with a delicate accompaniment of seasoned herbs. It made our selection even more difficult, focussing on the garlic bread. We eventually settled on sharing a starter of Parma Ham and melon garnished with fresh strawberries.
